The more I began to think about it, the more I realized how often I lie to myself on a daily basis! This is because “thoughts are so powerful,” according Dr. Doidge in his book "The Brain That Changes Itself." Thoughts can cause us pain or they can create joy and happiness for us. So now that I have realized that my thoughts and beliefs can cause me and emotional and physical pain, I came to the conclusion to try and control those thoughts and believe only those which brought me joy and happiness. If we could only be honest with ourselves, we would know what we really want in life. We all have beliefs about what we think we want to be, do or experience. Most of us (if not all of us) find it difficult to break out of the mindset that our lives are only as good as our current situation or environment. For example, many people feel that they lack self-confidence; this leads them to question their ability to do well in certain areas of life. However, self-confidence is brought about by having faith in our abilities. We must believe that we are good enough to do well in areas that interest us. Perhaps some of us are misunderstood. We may be unsure of certain things because others tell us what to think. Have you ever met someone who completely tells you what you should think, feel or do? How annoying! Of course, there are times when someone will offer advice but it is up to the individual to decide whether or not they want to take it or not. I had a friend who was severely disfigured because of acne scarring on her face, arms and chest area. She had been devastated by her appearance and because of the lack of self-confidence brought on by her facial appearance she decided to give up on looking for a job and enroll in school. This caused her parents to worry about her and they advised her against it. She became even more discouraged knowing that her parents were not happy about her choices. This led to many arguments between them and she started spending even more time at home alone watching television, surfing the internet and doing other things that kept her busy so that she wouldn’t have to think about herself or be around others. I heard that she was struggling with an eating disorder as well as depression at this time. At some point during her recovery, she realized that her parents had lost hope in her finding a job and getting out on her own because of what she looked like. This caused her to become frustrated with them and say things that were not so nice which led to another argument. Her parents wanted to help but they saw no way for their daughter to overcome the social stigmas associated with people who have acne scarring. She became angry at their lack of faith in her abilities someday finding success in life despite the fact that she thought differently of herself. cfa1e77820
